Traditions

Joy.

Hope.

Expectation.

Longing.

Anticipation.

I love this time of the year! Our family celebrates Advent, the season of anticipating Christmas. There’s a sense of wonder and delight in our Advent traditions: the Advent Wreath, the Jesse Tree, the Advent Calendar, Christkind surprises, and best of all, the advent music.

Yes, the advent music. No, not Christmas carols, but music sung in anticipation of Christmas. Songs such as “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”, “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” and my very favorite, “Wake O Wake and Sleep No Longer,” which is based on Bach’s Cantata No. 140. Listen to it here.  Bach was an absolute genius at evoking a strong sense of longing, yearning and desiring. A year ago, when we entered church on the first Sunday of Advent, the organ started playing Cantata 140 and it picked me up and carried me away. From now on, Advent will have begun for me only when I’ve heard that music!

  1. I love advent, too! When my kids were younger, we gathered each night after dinner to decorate our “Jesse tree” and we lit advent candles each Sunday evening. While we no longer celebrate with those particular advent traditions, we do read short stories and listen to/play advent music. It’s a lovely time of year.
